Helping Others Benefits Your Brain

Giving support to others may have more brain benefits than receiving support.

A new study suggests that giving social support to others may benefit the giver more than the receiver on a neurobiological level. The researchers used fMRI brain imaging to pinpoint three specific brain benefits of giving social support to others.

The February 2016 study, “The Neurobiology of Giving Versus Receiving Support: The Role of Stress-Related and Social Reward-Related Neural Activity,” was published in Psychosomatic Medicine: Journal of Biobehavioral Medicine.

The author says: “It’s always encouraging when the latest neuroscience confirms the possibility of creating an upward spiral of well-being for all parties involved through prosocial acts of loving-kindness, generosity, and feelings of gratitude.”

Four billion people face severe water scarcity

F3.largeA new study published in Science Advances shows that the global fresh water crisis is worse than previously thought. Other studies focus on annual figures and fail to take into account seasonal fluctuations in rainfall. The new study assesses “blue water scarcity globally at a high spatial resolution on a monthly basis” and finds that two-thirds of the world’s human population experiences severe water shortage for at least one month of the year.

Considering that human needs are prioritized in all situations, we can conclude that the situation for life on earth as a whole is probably even worse than these figures indicate. The adoption of permaculture is a crucial part of remedying this situation. Coercive measures proposed by agencies and governments do not address the underlying ignorance which is the real cause,  they only give the ignorant bureaucrats and their power-crazy masters even more control over the population and do nothing useful.

Gates Foundation Plunders African Agriculture

gated-development-coverFrom a recent article in The Ecologist:

The Gates Foundation – widely assumed to be ‘doing good’, is imposing a neoliberal model of development and corporate domination that’s opening up Africa’s agriculture to land and seed-grabbing global agribusiness, writes Colin Todhunter. In the process it is foreclosing on the real solutions – enhancing food security, food sovereignty and the move to agroecological farming.

The article is a thorough summary of a report by Global Justice Now: ‘Gated Development – Is the Gates Foundation always a force for good?’. It goes into detail about the foundation’s extremely dodgy connections and actions. Well worth a read.

Using Western NGOs to Steal Africa’s Resources

“One thing that keeps me puzzled, despite having studied finance and economics at the world’s best universities, the following question remains unanswered. Why is it that 5,000 units of our currency is worth one unit of your currency where we are the ones with the actual gold reserves? It’s quite evident that the aid is in fact not coming from the West to Africa but from Africa to the Western world. The Western world depends on Africa in every possible way since alternative resources are scarce out here. So how does the West ensure that the free aid keeps coming? By systematically destabilizing the wealthiest African nations and their systems, and all that backed by huge PR campaigns — leaving the entire world under the impression that Africa is poor and dying and merely surviving on the mercy of the West.

Schools Revert to Ethernet Over Health Fears

i_love_microwavesIn a rare example of the precautionary principle, the Mayor of Borgofranco d’Ivrea in Piedmont, Italy has ordered two schools to use ethernet instead of wireless. While there may still be some doubt about the extent of damage to children’s health by microwaves there can be no doubt at all about the lack of logic in the “arguments” of the angry townspeople and councillors.

It’s important for us to act now before the transfer to wi-fi only is complete in our devices, and there is no alternative. At the moment, even an iPhone or iPad can be connected to ethernet, albeit somewhat clumsily and expensively. If the industry continues on its current path, that option will be gone in a few years.

Rural DIY Internet in Greece

A community in a remote mountainous area of Greece has created its own access to the internet via a wireless mesh network. As well as serving the local people, free wi-fi is available for visitors. This is a truly autonomous network. When something goes wrong, people work together to fix it. It’s helping to bring together a widely dispersed people.

More Gates Badness

charity-scamA recent article on pontiactribune.com sheds some more light on the dodgy “charity” that Bill Gates is operating. Knowing the pointlessness of reading the foundation’s own publicity, or the mainstream media’s parroting of it, they dug into the recently released tax returns for 2012.

Apart from the shameful investments in corporations which finance most of the things the Foundation claims to be trying to alleviate, one interesting item came up which could be easily overlooked.

Until recently, I, like many people I know, believed that charities were required to publish their accounts and be open to the public. Apparently not. One year after Mother Jones reported the foundation’s investment in a seriously dodgy prison company, the philanthropy’s trust will not say if one of its most controversial holdings is still on its books.

All is not as it seems in the Charity world, I think.

Anyway, here’s the pdf archive of the page in case it goes.

Facebook to Suck Profit From World’s Poor

tumblr_zuckerberg

To view the mainstream media reports and the publicity from internet.org may give the impression that Zuckerberg is doing something laudable, providing “internet” access for free to poor people. Digging deeper only encounters obstruction by way of weasel-worded vagueness about the actual services provided.

To be honest, I only spent a couple of hours researching this. Time is precious and wasting too much of it chasing the plans of megalomaniac control freaks has only limited value. We just have to continue building our own alternatives and trying to wake people up to the fake replacements of real things we are being fobbed off with. Don’t  blame Zuckerberg, he’s just being a greedy parasite as is his nature. It’s up to us to thwart his efforts to bend our world to benefit him at our expense.
